Tips for Families

If you’re not a reader, but you’re interested in becoming one, we have some tips!

Ways to Become a Reader-
Have plenty of high interest reading materials on hand.

Keep a running list of what your friends are recommending, so you have the next book ready to go. You can buy a reading journal or make your own with a simple notebook. You can also use sites like Goodreads to record books online.

Audio books count as reading, too, so make use of Audible or free apps available through your public library like Libby or Hoopla. A librarian can help you learn to use them in one quick visit.

Allow yourself to abandon books you’re not enjoying.

Have an inviting reading space. This could be a comfy chair, bathtub, or hammock. Be creative.

Have a book with you at all times. Waiting rooms, parking lots, and store lines are great places to do a little reading.

Reading magazines and news “count” as reading, but they don’t lure you into a captivating story that you look forward to continuing. We want to long for our next reading time!

These strategies work for all ages. Become a reading family!

From our Bookshelves

Win the Day

Mr. Mike from the Book Bums café at Kids First (7900 East Kemper Road) has purchased at least five copies of Win the Day, 7 Habits to Help You Stress Less and Accomplish More. Mike listens to The Aggressive Life podcast, and after hearing author Mark Batterson as a guest on the show, Mike decided to purchase this book. He loved it, and now he shares it with anyone who’ll agree to read it. It might just be what you’re looking for.

Practical Grammar

Here is a common writing mistake you can fix easily.

Alot is not a word. It’s only written like this: a lot.
A lot of people make this mistake.

This is a completely different word: allot
allot: to assign as a share or portion
We will allot 10 minutes for the speech.
