Description
When making words past tense, the sound for that final -ed can be tricky. E-d can represent the sounds /Ed/, /d/, and /t/. Building upon the lessons where we learned when adding the -ing suffix to words (FFL 3.4), your students, when adding the suffix -ed, will continue: 1) “covering” magic e’s and letting another vowel (here, a different e) do the magic, 2) adding blocker letters to protect short vowels, and 3) simply adding final endings when adding those ending won’t change the sounds of the base word.
