Description
You will don pirate’s eye patch and teach your students that the letter combination a-r represents an unexpected sound. It says, “Ar!” like a pirate. Though it looks like a basic short a, that a is being “controlled” by the r and it almost sounds like a short o. That’s tricky! With plentiful opportunities for reading and spelling words with a-r saying “Ar!”, your scholars’ confidence will grow as they can access more and more words.
Note: In these FFL lessons we’ll differentiate between “r-controlled” words and “bossy r” words. We say that words with a-r saying /ar/ (like in shark) and words with o-r saying /or/ (like Oreos) are “r-controlled” words, while words with a-r, e-r, i-r, o-r, and u-r saying /r/–with no vowel sound detected (like dollar, her, stir, color, and fur) are “bossy r” words.
